A plain-English guide to reading a Shilajit Certificate of Analysis so you can judge purity, safety and fulvic content with confidence.

Shilajit is a mineral-rich exudate that oozes from Himalayan rocks, and in its raw form it can carry whatever the rock and soil carried — including heavy metals and microbes. That is exactly why a lab report matters. A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the document a responsible brand shares to prove a batch has been tested and is safe to consume.

But a COA is only useful if you can read it. Rows of numbers, unfamiliar units and test method codes can feel intimidating. This guide walks you through each part of a genuine Shilajit lab report in plain language, so you know what to look for — and what red flags should make you pause before buying.

What a COA actually is (and isn't)

A Certificate of Analysis is a report from a testing laboratory showing what was measured in a specific batch of product. A trustworthy COA names the product, mentions a batch or lot number, states the testing date, and ideally comes from a NABL-accredited or equivalent third-party lab rather than only the brand's own in-house claim.

Be aware of what a COA does not do. It does not prove that a health benefit will happen for you, and it does not certify the whole brand forever — it certifies one batch. If a report has no batch number, no lab name, or no date, treat it as marketing rather than evidence.

Heavy metals: the most important section

Because Shilajit is a natural rock exudate, heavy metals are the single most important safety parameter. Look for lead (Pb), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd) at minimum. Each should show a measured result alongside a permissible limit, usually in parts per million (ppm) or mg/kg.

The measured value should sit comfortably below the stated limit — and lower is better. Watch for results shown as 'BDL' or 'Below Detection Limit', which is a good sign but only meaningful when the detection limit itself is listed. Reputable labs test heavy metals using instruments like ICP-MS or AAS; you may see these abbreviations in the method column.

Microbial safety

Raw natural material can carry microbial contamination, so a good COA includes a microbiology panel. Common parameters are Total Plate Count (or Total Viable Count), Yeast and Mould Count, and specific pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus.

Pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli should read 'Absent' or 'Not Detected' in the tested sample size. Counts such as Total Plate Count will have numerical limits (measured in CFU/g). Again, the measured figure should fall within the stated acceptable range.

Fulvic acid percentage — and the method behind it

Fulvic acid content is Shilajit's headline number, but it is also the most misunderstood. A percentage on its own means little without the test method beside it, because different methods can produce very different figures for the same sample. Ask which method was used — for example a gravimetric or spectrophotometric approach — so you are comparing like with like.

Be cautious of sky-high fulvic claims with no method disclosed. In classical Ayurvedic thinking, Shilajit's value comes from the whole mineral-humic complex, not a single isolated number. So treat fulvic percentage as one useful data point, not the sole measure of quality.

Cross-checks that separate a real COA from a fake

A genuine report ties together several details: the product name matches what you are buying, the batch number matches the tin in your hand, and the test date is recent. The lab should be independent and, ideally, accredited, with a contact or accreditation number you can verify.

Beware copy-paste reports where the same document is used across every batch, images that are cropped to hide the lab header, or 'certificates' that only show a logo and a pass stamp. If a brand hesitates to share a batch-specific COA on request, that reluctance is itself informative.

Where the evidence stands

It is worth being honest here. Testing for heavy metals and microbes is well established and directly tied to consumer safety — this is where a COA genuinely protects you. The evidence for Shilajit's specific health benefits in humans, however, is still limited and largely preliminary, and a lab report cannot substitute for that.
